Chapter Eleven
Zuri took the week off work, and they spent it much the same as they did the first day. Carmen was always awake before him, not much of a surprise since Zuri enjoyed sleeping in, and they would eat breakfast together before Zuri retreated to his office. Zuri would stay there until midafternoon, so Carmen could have time to himself.
Carmen never went outside, and that bothered Zuri. If Carmen was going to get over his issues, then he needed to start facing them. Zuri wasn’t a psychologist, and never pretend to be one, but he knew to get over a trauma you couldn’t avoid it forever. His mate did fine when they went clothes shopping, but now he seemed to go as far as stepping around any sun coming in from the windows. Zuri heard of how Carmen feared the sun due to one of his Master’s punishments, and it hurt him to see his beautiful mate still suffering.
Zuri spoke to Ian every morning as well, per their agreement. Ian did not want to let Carmen go after finding him, but Zuri promised to give updates and not to keep Carmen away from his family. Having a mate made things a little more complicated, but he didn’t mind.
Carmen always made lunch, usually a simple thing like a sandwich, and brought it to Zuri’s office for him. No matter how many times Zuri said he didn’t need to do that, Carmen would shake his head and say he wanted to. At least Carmen would stay in the office and eat his sandwich with Zuri.
After lunch, Carmen would leave, shutting the door behind him. Zuri could hear his mate move through the house before spending most afternoons in his room.
Around three or four in the afternoon, Zuri would leave his office and knock at Carmen’s door. They would go downstairs and talk. Mostly Zuri talked, and Carmen listened. Carmen would ask about Zuri’s family and his past lives. Zuri enjoyed telling his mate about his life, but he always hoped Carmen would talk about his own life. Carmen said he remembered everything, yet he never talked about any of it. It seemed that everything was off limits, including the happier parts before he was taken.
After dinner, they would sit and watch a movie with Carmen always in the same spot on Zuri’s lap. The torture of the day was always made worth it for the moments he could spend touching his mate. Zuri would spend the entire movie rubbing lazy circles across Carmen’s skin. They never went as far as they did the first night, and Zuri waited patiently for his mate to ask him for more. He wanted his mate, but Carmen seemed happy not to talk at all, and it broke Zuri’s heart a little.
There was only one reason Zuri didn’t push Carmen. He could tell Carmen was happy. It was nice, peaceful even, but Zuri knew this happy bubble would pop, and, the longer it took, the more painful it might be.
